Individual sessions are charged at $270 which is slightly lower than the Australian Psychological Society's recommended fees for Clinical Psychologists. Neuropsychological assessments are quoted according to requirements. Groups are $650 for 8 week classes of 1 ½ -2 hours.
Medicare has schemes that allow rebates for both individual and group sessions.
The most common is the Better Access to Mental Health Care scheme. Under this scheme, a referral may be given to you by a GP or psychiatrist. They will assess your eligibility for a Mental Health Care Plan, and provide you with paperwork to bring to your first appointment or group session.
The Medicare rebate for a 50 min appointment with a clinical psychologist is $131.65 if you have not reached the safety net. Once you reach the safety net, the rebate is 80% of the gap which means your out of pocket cost is approx $28 a session. You can access rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Rebates for groups are also possible and can be in addition to rebates for individual sessions.
If you have private health cover for psychological treatment then you may also be entitled to claim a rebate. The claimable amount and number of sessions per calendar year depend on your health cover. We suggest you consult your private health insurer for more information.
You can only claim a rebate through either Medicare OR your private health insurer for any one session or group class.
We are always willing to discuss fees if this is a barrier for you.
